For centuries, Dandelion has been valued in Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) for its unique properties in supporting udder health.
There is a beautiful traditional story behind Dandelion.
More than a thousand years ago, in ancient China, a young woman suddenly developed a painful breast inflammation. Her breast became red, swollen, and painful, but because of the social restrictions of that time, she was too embarrassed to tell anyone.
She silently endured the pain until her mother discovered her condition. Misunderstanding the situation, her family blamed her instead of understanding her suffering.
Heartbroken and unable to explain herself, the young woman left home and walked alone to a river, where she decided to end her life.
Fortunately, a fisherman and his daughter happened to see her and rescued her from the river. After hearing her story, the fisherman thought for a moment and told his daughter:
“Go to the mountain tomorrow and bring back a herb. This plant may help her.”
The next morning, the fisherman’s daughter found a small wild plant with jagged green leaves and a white fluffy flower. She collected it, prepared it as a herbal drink, and gave it to the young woman.
After several days, the inflammation gradually disappeared, and she recovered.
Before saying goodbye, the fisherman gave her some of the herb and told her:
“Keep this plant. If the problem comes back, it may help you again.”
The young woman later planted the herb in her garden and named it after her rescuers — the fisherman named Pu Gong and his daughter Ying — Pugongying, that is Dandelion. And then Pugongying's remedy for "milk sores" (mastitis) was passed down through generations.
Today, modern research continues to explore why this humble herb has attracted so much attention.
🌱 How does Dandelion support mastitis management?
Dandelion contains natural active compounds such as dandelion sterols, phenolic acids, and flavonoids, which contribute to:
✅ Supporting antibacterial activity against common mastitis-related pathogens
(such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus species)
✅ Helping regulate inflammatory responses and reduce udder swelling
✅ Supporting milk flow and mammary gland function
✅ Assisting in reducing somatic cell counts (SCC) and improving udder health during lactation
By combining traditional herbal wisdom with modern processing technology, Dandelion can become a valuable tool for sustainable dairy production.
